Paintings by John & Elli Milan are featured at Smith Galleries on Hilton Head

      The paintings of John and Elli Milan are featured in a special 24th Anniversary Exhibition of paintings on paper at Smith Galleries on Hilton Head, SC.
     John and Elli Milan met in Hawaii while Elli was still in high school and John was "beach bumming". Deciding early to make a career as artists, they enrolled at Savannah College of Art and Design and later transferred to the University of Georgia where they received their BFA in painting. It was in this small, but vital city, that the couple developed personal styles and began showing their work in local galleries.
     After graduation the couple worked independently but began dreaming about working together. Today, they live their dream and the Milans create their paintings together. Although John and Elli are both accomplished artists on their own, this collaboration brings out a side of their work that neither could reach by themselves. The couple says that the Spirit of God inspires their work and allows them to create together and maintain a unified vision. The end result is aggressive and spontaneous layers of paint which create a bright and playful scenario that is interwoven with hints of narrative.

Melanie Wood Show Opens at Smith Galleries

Smith Galleries is featuring a special showing of new oil paintings by Melanie Wood as part of its anniversary celebration. Mrs. Wood says, “As an eternal optimist, my joy for living infuses every painting with a vibrant, impressionistic style. Painting is the result of my lifelong journey into self-discovery and translating the delights I encounter, both commonplace and extraordinary, into a personal vision for others to enjoy. Working exclusively in oils, I strive to capture on canvas the energy and spontaneity that drive my love for each new day and fuel my imagination, whether it be violet haze over the Tennessee Smoky Mountains, the fields of Provence or courtyards of Sienna, poppies along a garden walk, or a red vase overflowing with sunflowers. “

Kovecses Designs Fine Woodworking at Smith Galleries

Smith Galleries is known for fine woodworking and the fine woodworking of Kovecses Designs fits perfectly in the gallery mix. Joe and Karen Kovecses create contemporary ikebana vessels as well as small boxes and bowls. All have a very modern oriental feel. Some of the woods that are used would be termed exotics with bubinga, wenge and zebra being the predominant choices. Curly maple is often used with the clean light wood contrasting beautifully with the darker exotics.
